Created in 2008 as UK’s 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s famous concert of the same name. The line up at the UK’s premier reggae festival just got bigger. One Love fest, taking place at Hop Farm on August 10th-12th has announced a couple of additions to their line up. Firstly they’ll be joined by Fun Lovin Criminals Fast and Frankie Benbini in their Radio Riddler guise. The laidback twosome have combined their love of Prince and reggae to reimagine the classic LP Purple Rain as, prosaically enough, Purple Reggae.In making the project Radio Riddler picked up a bunch of guest stars, including Plan B, Madness and Sinnead O Conner performing a version of Supajam favourite I Would Die 4 U. They’ll be showcasing Purple Reggae alongside other material at One Love, and we’ve got fingers crossed for some good guest appearences…
The festival has also booked some acts from the world of Jungle- that most English form of reggae- with a host of DJs putting in an appearence. Spearheading the junglists are turntable legends Jumping Jack Frost, Nicky Blackmarket and Funky Flirt. After the sandwich, jungle is basically the best thing England ever invented. Radio Riddler aka Fun Lovin Criminals’ members Fast, and Frank Benbini will be showcasing their ‘Purple Reggae’, a reggae tribute to Prince and the ‘Purple Rain’ album in its entirety at this summer’s One Love Festival.
According to an interview with drummer Frank Benbini the album is a true labour of love, “We’d done a lot of remixes for a lot of people, so why not do the soundtrack to ‘Purple Rain’? I started to approach different people and one person I approached was Sinéad O’Connor. She hasn’t sung a Prince song since ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ which was an international number one so I didn’t think she’d go for it. But she did, and did a version of ‘I Would Die 4 U’. Amazing! Then we’ve got Plan B, he’s doing one, Madness are doing one, the singer from UB40′s doing one. So, yeah, that’s a great little project we’ve got going!”
One Love Festival goers will get to hear the album in full at this year’s event. Also confirmed today are Jumping Jack Frost, Nicky Blackmarket, Funky Flirt, Uncle Dugs, Dialect, Kosine, and Mr Innovation.
Now in its fifth year, One Love festival, happens from Friday 10th until Sunday 12th August 2012, at a new location, moving away from London to The Hop Farm, Paddock Wood, Tonbridge, in Kent.
There are already some acts confirmed for the event which was created in recognition of one of the worlds greatest ever rock gig, Bob Marley’s famous 1978 ‘One Love’ concert, the One Love Festival is the UK’s only annual Reggae Camping Festival.

Extended Early Bird Tier 2 weekend adult (aged 16+) tickets are priced at £100 until May 1st when will go up in price too Tier 3 full price tickets. The One Love Festival takes place every year in August and is the UK’s Number 1 Reggae Camping Festival and is 5yrs old starting in 2008 in East Sussex and now have moved into new site Hop Farm in Kent.
About the original One Love Concert (1978):
The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22nd, 1978, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties; Jamaican Labour Party and the People’s National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers’ performance of “Jammin”, when Marley joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).
Bob Marley said the following as he called the two politicians onstage and held their hands above his head: “His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, I run lightning, leading the people of the slaves to shake hands. . . To show the people that you love them right, to show the people that you gonna unite, show the people that you’re over bright, show the people that everything is all right. Watch, watch, watch, what you’re doing, because. . I’m not so good at talking but I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. I’m trying to say, could we have, could we have, up here onstage here the presence of Mr. Michael Manley and Mr. Edward Seaga. I just want to shake hands and show the people that we’re gonna unite . . . we’re gonna unite . . . we’ve got to unite . . . The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead. The sights and sounds of the Carribean will transform a slice of the Garden of Engand this summer for a three day music festival inspired by Jamiacan culture.
The fifth annual One Love Festival, to be held at The Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, will offer a visual, audio and cultural explosion to celebrate 50 years of Jamaican independence as well as some top names from the reggae world.
Straight from the West Indies, reggae legend Freddie McGregor and Dancehall King Frankie Paul headline the festival, which is packed full of more new school dubstep bands as well.
Others making the Carribean crossing will be Studio 1 falsetto singer Cornel Campbell, heavy beats band Dub Syndicate, Jamaican singing combo Michigan and Smiley, hit maker and toaster Tapper Zukie and son of the legendary Gregory Isaacs, Kevin Issacs.
This year’s One Love Festival is expected to be one of the UK’s largest gatherings of roots music, set across four stages with the largest reggae film programme list ever shown in Europe.

Dubstep and Dubwise breaks come to One Love
The One Love reggae festival, now in its fifth year, has moved to a new site this year – Hop Farm in Kent, also the home of Vince Power’s acclaimed new fest.
Amongst the top reggae acts – including Aba Shanti-I, Cornell Campbell, Dawn Penn, the Disciples, Dub Syndicate, Iration Steppas, King Tubby, Macka B, Michigan and Smiley – there are a whole raft of top quality electronic music acts playing the Lively Up Yourself marquee at the event.
Tailoring to an extent their sets to reflect One Love’s vibe, some great dubstep and dance acts will be rolling up to throw down some big anthems.
Barry Ashworth from the Dub Pistols has curated the dance tent on the Saturday night, bringing some of his peers along to join his Dub Pistols Soundsystem. Breakbeat legend Krafty Kuts, acclaimed duo The Freestylers, Mooqee & Pimpsoul, aka the Bombstrikes Soundsystem, and the Drum Monkeys will be spinning dubwise breaks and other sounds in keeping with the event.
Meanwhile, on the Friday night, dubstep comes to the dub festival, which was set up in memory of reggae legend Bob Marley. Curated by top dubstep-inclined audio-visual crew the Urban Knights, the line-up is headed by dubstep pioneer Hatcha, one of the sound’s pioneers since his days in Croydon with Skream & Benga and the like. The Kiss FM DJ will be joined by Eddie K, Fonti & Bushkin (formerly the Heartless Crew), Killsonic, and the Urban Knights themselves.
